Intelligent Parametric Optimization of Building Atrium Design: A Case Study for a Sustainable and Comfortable Environment

Abstract: Building atrium design is crucial to maintaining a sustainable built environment and providing thermal comfort to occupants. This study proposes a parametric framework to optimize the atrium’s geometry for environmental performance and thermal comfort improvement. It integrates the parametric design, performance simulation, and multi-objective optimization in the Rhino and Grasshopper platform to realize automatic optimization. The atrium’s well index, shape ratio, volume ratio, position index, and inner inter… Show more

“…Furthermore, the researchers have examined natural and artificial ventilation as significant thermal comfort parameters. For instance, the authors investigated the parameters that influence the optimization of energy use with regard to the specific atrium typology in buildings and divided the energy simulation periods in which the HVAC systems were applied [14]. The researchers have also explored using HVAC systems to meet thermal comfort levels in different seasons [5,6].…”

“…In another seminal research work, Lee et al reviewed the major concepts of responsive architecture that can be evaluated within the scope of energy-efficient buildings and environments with smart systems [23]. Comprehensive surveys on smart building technologies, systems, and sensing technologies also aim to discover new approaches in human-building interactions with regard to energy use and occupation, as well as the features of buildings and components [2,14]. A deep survey was also made on the categorizing of the applied smart technologies in [2]; the work was similar to that in [24].…”

“…Ecological sustainability, economic sustainability, and social sustainability are three interrelated and inseparable aspects that together form the sustainability of human society. Similarly, the renewal and sustainability of industrial heritage necessitate attention to various issues, including ecological conservation, economic efficiency, urban needs, historical heritage, and social environment [26][27][28]. Given the multitude of intricate internal and external requirements, this research aims to address the decision problem of the direction of industrial heritage development by employing mathematical methodologies and techniques for precise inference and computation of said development.…”
