The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in construction projects has surged in recent years and is believed to represent a significant potential for increasing productivity and efficiency in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to present a state-of-the-art view of the field by conducting a review of publications concerning the topic of AI in construction and comparing the findings to previously conducted reviews. This paper provides an overview of the recent and current uses of AI in construction projects, through a descriptive analysis of the characteristics and contents of 86 peer-reviewed articles from 2015 to 2020. Although the application of AI in the industry is not entirely new, construction appears to currently be behind other industries in terms of adopting and adapting to AI. The results show that a wide range of research is conducted on AI in construction projects. A limited number of publication channels and authors stand behind a significant part of the reviewed publications. Most studies are conceptual or use a mixed-methods research design. The research addresses several areas of application, but there is a predominance of quantitatively based subfields of construction, such as estimation and cost control, logistics, planning, and scheduling. Future research should focus on developing holistic and process-oriented frameworks for projects to move from ambition to practice. Findings can inform the future development and implementation of AI in the construction industry context. For researchers, this study identifies areas in need of further attention and examines possibilities for future exploration of multidisciplinary approaches that combine construction engineering, project management, AI, and social science. For practitioners, the study highlights current trends and work within the field, providing an overview of the potential for pilot studies, tests, and innovations.

PurposeThe aim of the study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of interrelations of structural systems and main planning considerations in supertall buildings (≥300 m).Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 140 contemporary supertall towers using the case study method to analyze structural systems in the light of the key design considerations to contribute to the creation of more viable supertall building projects.Findings Central core typology, outriggered frame system, composite material and tapered prismatic and free forms were the most preferred features in supertall building design. Shear walled frame and tube systems occurred mostly in the 300–400 m height range, while outriggered frame systems were in the range of 300–600 m in height. Asia, the Middle East and North America mainly preferred outriggered frame systems, followed by tube systems. Considering the building function and form, the most preferred structural system in each of these groups was outriggered frame system, while mixed-use function stood out in all structural systems except in shear walled frame system.Originality/valueTo date, there has been no comprehensive study in the literature of the interrelations of structural systems and important planning considerations in the design of contemporary supertall towers through a large set of study samples. This critical issue was multidimensionally explored in this paper in light of 140 detailed case studies of supertall buildings around the world.

In recent years, the impact of the construction industry on the economy of India is increasing. However, there are a number of problems that are being faced by the construction companies or contractors or other relevant stakeholders, in the completion of a construction project. One of the major problems being faced is time and cost overrun. Thus, it is important to find ways of mitigating this critical problem. One of the solutions that is being used is the prediction of the amount and time that a project might overrun beforehand i.e. estimating the overrun during the design phase itself. This prediction can be done using a number of different techniques, the important one of which used in this paper is through the use of Fuzzy Logic. It also provides a brief description about the factors that are responsible for causing this cost overrun. The factors are identified by conducting a questionnaire survey and gathering responses from the relevant stakeholders which include contractors, project engineers, architects and consultants. The responses collected are further processed and analysed using SPSS software. The top 5 factors have been selected after the analysis and further used in preparation of the fuzzy logic model in the fuzzy toolbox of MATLAB. Further, the validation of this model has been done with real-time data of projects from various published research papers. Thus, the model developed provided prediction of the percentage of the cost overrun based on the percentage input of the top five factors.
