ABSTRACTThe tile fish, Lopholatilus villarii, occurs from Brazil to Argentina where it is commercially important it because possesses highly appreciated meat. The aim of this study was to identify the larvae of anisakid and raphidascaridid nematodes and trypanorhynch cestodes in L. villarii purchased in fish markets of the municipality of Niterói, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and calculate their parasitological indices and present their sites of infection. From August 2015 to September 2016, 31 specimens of L. villarii were investigated. The fish were necropsied and their viscera and musculature analyzed. The helminths found were processed according to standard helminthological techniques for taxonomic identification. Of 31 fish analyzed, 28 (90.3%) were parasitized with larvae of anisakid and raphidascaridid nematodes, Anisakis sp., Terranova sp., Pseudoterranova sp. and Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum (L 3 and L 4 ) and plerocercus of the trypanorhynch cestode Otobothrium sp. Their parasitological indices were calculated. The helminths parasitized mainly the serosas of intestine, stomach and liver, and H. deardorffoverstreetorum was also parasitizing the abdominal musculature of one fish. This is the first report of anisakid and raphidascaridid nematodes and trypanorhynch cestodes in L. villarii. Hygienic-sanitary aspects were discussed.

During the last decade, many morphotypes of larval forms of Hysterothylacium have been proposed; however, their boundaries are taxonomically unclear. We compare newly collected material with data available for Hysterothylacium larvae, based on genetics and morphology, in order to evaluate their relationships and simplify their classification. The previously described Hysterothylacium larval type IV, type V, and type X were found in several marine fishes from Brazil. A new Hysterothylacium larval type XV, parasitic in Elops saurus from State of Sergipe, north-eastern Brazil, was proposed based on its genetic singularity and the presence of numerous spines throughout the body. Based upon phylogenetic reconstruction using the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) ITS2 sequences along with morphological traits, the following third stage larvae were considered valid (synonyms are inside parenthesis) type III (= types VII and VIII), type V (= types VI, XII, and XIII), and type X (= type XIV). Despite the lack of molecular data, Hysterothylacium larval type II is considered as synonym of type I because of their identical morphology. The morphometry of Hysterothylacium third stage larvae proved to be weak as a diagnostic tool due to its high rates of variation. Phylogenetic reconstruction using the concatenated sequences of rDNA ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and the mitochondrion DNA (mtDNA) cox2 revealed that the sampled Hysterothylacium larval types V may represent three different species and H. deardorffovestreetorum may represent two different taxa. Furthermore, H. deardorffovestreetorum is considered species inquirenda due to its problematic description and diagnosis which are based only on larvae. A key to Hysterothylacium larvae from marine fishes is provided.

Anisakidae are represented mainly by species of Anisakis Dujardin, 1845, Pseudoterranova Krabbe, 1878, and Contracaecum Railliet and Henry, 1913. Integrative taxonomy, based on morphological and genetic approaches, can provide a precise identification of species, increasing the knowledge of their systematics, biology, and evolution. In this study, integrative taxonomy was applied in order to identify, at generic and/or specific taxonomic level, 245 anisakids from 63 cetaceans of 12 different species, which stranded in the Brazilian coast. Parasites from nine hosts were preserved by freezing and, from 54 hosts, were fixed in 70% ethanol (n = 43) or alcohol-formalin-acetic (n = 11) for a period varying from 6 to 19 years. The morphological analysis allowed the identification of 171 specimens at genus level: 120 as Anisakis sp. clade I, 47 as Anisakis sp. clade II, and four as Pseudoterranova sp. From those 15, specimens were identified at species level, seven as Anisakis typica, seven as Anisakis paggiae and one as Anisakis brevispiculata. Moreover, 74 specimens were identified as belonging to Anisakidae family. The genetic analysis based on cox2 gene allowed the identification/confirmation of Anisakis typica (n = 33), Anisakis paggiae (n = 1), and for the first time in the Brazilian coast, Anisakis brevispiculata (n = 4) and Anisakis ziphidarum (n = 1). Additionally, a probably new Anisakis species, genetically close to A. paggiae, is reported infecting a dwarf sperm whale. The results clearly indicated that the preservation of nematodes influenced significantly on the level of taxonomic definition, in both morphological and, mainly, genetic analyses. Pseudoterranova sp. was identified for the first time in the spinner dolphin, Stenella longirostris. The detection of nine A. paggiae specimens, in three Kogia breviceps animals, substantiates the austral occurrence of this species. The identification of A. brevispiculata in Kogia sima and K. breviceps confirms Kogiidae whales as their most common hosts. Anisakis typica was corroborated as a generalist species, the most widely distributed in the Brazilian coast, infecting a broad variety of Delphinidae and Kogiidae, with two new geographical records in Stenella frontalis and Lagenodelphis hosei. The study showed a new scenery of parasite diversity of marine anisakids, updating the Anisakis species distribution.
