AbstractThis study aims to improve the quality of English learning at SMPN 2 Magelang. It focuses in improving the students’ writing competence of procedure text through task-based learning. The method used in this study was a classroom action research. There were two cycles carried in this study which included four stages in each cycle, they were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The data in this study were collected through observation, test, and also questionnaire. From the result, it was revealed that there was an improvement in the students’ writing competence of procedure text. Meanwhile, 92% of the students show a positive response towards the learning process.

English has always been the second language taught in both primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. Students need to master English for communication, job requirements, advancement in science and technology and many other reasons. One of the most difficult components to master is the writing skill. As it requires knowledge in grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary to produce a good piece of writing, students must be fully equipped with all the essential abilities. Henceforth, this study aims to investigate the potential use of social media in improving the writing skill among primary students. The respondents of this research comprised of 47 ESL primary school students from a rural area in one of the states in Malaysia. The students" perceptions were measured through a questionnaire comprising a survey and open-ended questions. The finding of this study indicated that most respondents have access to social media and that they perceived social media as beneficial for the ESL educators to incorporate ICT into their teaching repertoire. It is concluded that incorporating social media in the classroom breaks the barriers in learning and converts it into a constructive learning environment. Contribution/Originality: The study has investigated the use of social media in improving the writing skill. Much has been said about its potential but limited studies have examined the perspective of young students at the age of ten in a rural area. Therefore, this adds to the current existing literature on this issue.

The effectiveness of teaching methods has been studied by researchers around the globe. According to many past studies, Project Based Learning (PBL) is one of the teaching methods that benefit the pupils' performance in the classroom. One of the benefits is to enhance pupils' English speaking skill. In this paper, the researchers intend to provide literature review and past studies on Gold Standard Project Based Learning (GSPBL). GSPBL was designed by Buck Institute for Education. The findings of past studies indicate that GSPBL could assist English teachers to improve pupils' speaking practice during class activities. After investigating on how GSPBL could enhance the pupils' English speaking skill from the literature review, the researchers are proposing this study to be carried out at an urban government school in Kuala Lumpur. The objective of this research is to investigate pupils' speaking performance in English speaking skill before and after the implementation of Gold Standard Project Based Learning. There will be 30 of intermediate Year Three pupils involved in this study. The researchers will conduct a qualitative case study for eight weeks to investigate pupils' speaking performance before and after the implementation of Gold Standard PBL. Observation, interview and documents will be used as data collection tools. The documents are Classroom Based Assessment report. The data from the observation notes, interview responses and documents will be analysed thematically. The findings of this paper would benefit the English teachers with regard to equipping them with the measures to carry out GSPBL more effectively as classroom activity. Apparently, the pupils could also enhance their English language speaking skill after GSPBL has been introduced and implemented as their classroom activity.
