Integrative models for joint analysis of shoot growth and branching patterns

Abstract: Plants exhibit dependences between shoot growth and branching that generate highly structured patterns. The characterization of the patterning mechanism is still an open issue because of the developmental processes involved with both succession of events (e.g. internode elongation, axillary shoot initiation and elongation) and complex dependences among neighbouring positions along the parent shoot. Statistical models called semi-Markov switching partitioned conditional generalized linear models were built on t… Show more

“…In this study and according to Peyhardi et al (2013), we considered the values of RLE during the n days days before leaf emergence of the considered metamer on which sylleptic lateral development can occur. Moreover, we assumed that a sylleptic lateral only appears at a given rank (called r k ) below the terminal apex, in order to represent the inhibition of axillary bud outgrowth by the apical meristem (Cline, 2000; Beveridge, 2006).…”

“…An interesting situation is for intermediate E l , in which, depending on B, the axis can either bend downwards, displaying a mixture of plagiotropism and orthotropism, or even become orthotropic and point towards the vertical at high B: Altogether, these observations show that the internal control of shape in plant axes summarises to only three traits, the BM E l triplet, or possibly four traits the BM WE l quadruplet if lateral axes with an antigravitropic curving rate are included. These four shape-driving numbers are traits that are defined at the scale of a 'slice of organ' (one-cell-thin stem segment or crosssection; Peyhardi et al, 2017), that is the minimal module of shape regulation, a kind of multicellular apparatus. This module includes several tissues (e.g.…”

“…Otro aspecto biomecánico importante es el patrón de ramificación de la copa (Peyhardi et al, 2017). Para lograr un crecimiento óptimo de las plantas, los ángulos de ramificación deberían minimizar tanto los costes estructurales como la superposición de hojas (Valladares y Niinemets, 2007).…”
