Integrative methods for analyzing big data in precision medicine

Abstract: We provide an overview of recent developments in big data analyses in the context of precision medicine and health informatics. With the advance in technologies capturing molecular and medical data, we entered the area of Big Data in biology and medicine. These data offer many opportunities to advance precision medicine. We outline key challenges in precision medicine and present recent advances in data integrationbased methods to uncover personalized information from big data produced by various omics studies.… Show more

“…The rate at which high-throughput and heterogeneous molecular and medical data are being produced forecasts a data-driven future for biology and medicine [13]. In consequence, computational biology will be one of the key players in the integration, analysis and interpretation of these complex datasets.…”

“…The development of new experimental tools (e.g. high-throughput next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry-based flow cytometry or real-time molecular imaging) will generate new information but, at the same time, massive amounts of (big) data that will have to be adequately handled, analysed and interpreted [112][113][114]. In this context, RIEKEBERG and POWERS [115] recently reviewed the methodological advancements and successful applications of metabolomics, one the newest omic fields.…”

“…Biomedical big data is closely embedded with a series of national life science projects, and is also a curial concept underlying precision medicine [8,9], a initiative advocated by US President Obama in 2015 to develop tailor-made treatments based on an individual's genetic content or other molecular or cellular analysis. Under this initiative, healthcare will be profoundly affected by digital management and interventions resulted from the wide and deep application of biomedical big data.…”
