Integrative behavioral couple therapy

Abstract: Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) is based in part on traditional behavioral couple therapy but expands both the conceptualization of couple distress and of intervention. The efficacy of IBCT has been supported in three clinical trials, including one with five year follow-up. Additionally, the effectiveness of IBCT in the real world has been supported through a system-wide dissemination effort in the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs. The reach of IBCT has also been extended through an o… Show more

“…Mindfulness training has been associated with enhanced marital quality in civilian couples (Carson et al, ). In addition, integrative behavioral couple therapy (IBCT; Christensen, Jacobson, & Babcock, ), which combines emotional acceptance (a component of mindfulness) with traditional behavioral couple therapy, has been shown to increase marital satisfaction in a randomized control trial with civilian couples (Christensen, Atkins, Baucom, & Yi, ). The effects of IBCT were sustained even at a 5‐year follow‐up and were greater compared with the effects of traditional cognitive couple therapy (Christensen et al, ).…”

“…As such, one potential avenue of research for couple‐based interventions are dismantling studies that elucidate effective mechanisms of change. Additionally, interventions such as Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) have shown great promise in military couple research but have yet to be adapted and empirically tested to treat PTSD in SM/Vs (Christensen, Jacobson, Babcock, Jacobson, & Gurman, ; Erbes et al, ; Jacobson & Christensen, ; Roddy, Nowlan, Doss, & Christensen, ). Future research might consider the mechanisms of change in IBCT and develop any necessary adaptations to treat PTSD among SM/Vs.…”

“…Essa mensuração tem também importantes implicações clínicas. Por exemplo, a terapia de casal comportamental integrativa (IBCT; Christensen, Jacobson, & Babcock, 1995;Jacobson, Christensen, Prince, Cordova, & Eldridge. 2000) salienta a importância da empatia para a resolução de conflitos e para a satisfação do casal.…”
