Integrative analysis of proteome and transcriptome dynamics duringBacillus subtilisspore revival

Abstract: Bacillus subtilis forms highly resistant, metabolically inactive dormant spores upon nutrient limitation. These endospores pose challenges to the food and medical sectors. Spores reactivate their metabolism upon contact with germinants and develop into vegetative cells. The activation of the molecular machinery that triggers the progress of germination and spore outgrowth is still unsettled. To gain further insight in spore germination and outgrowth processes, the transcriptome and proteome changeover during sp… Show more

“…On the contrary, a following study proved that protein synthesis is not essential for germination 11 . Parallel to these observations, in our proteomics studies 12,13 the relative quantity of MalS in the dormant spores is considerably high and during germination, there is no apparent change in its levels. The above-mentioned studies however, differ with respect to the age of the spores used in each study and the medium used for sporulation.…”

“…Transcriptome analysis is a technology that enables detection of expression levels and quantification of transcripts in a greater range. However, transcriptome studies of B. subtilis have been limited to transcriptional regulation in certain environments, such as specific media or growth conditions, rather than the expression level pattern [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. For this reason, several studies have been conducted by borrowing transcriptome analysis results from other species such as B. licheniformis [16] and B. megaterium [26] to screen promoters in B. subtilis.…”
