Integration of virtual and remote experiments into undergraduate engineering courses

Abstract: Experiments play an important role in the education of undergraduate engineering students as they provide hands-on experience on the foundations of the discipline. Unfortunately, the recent change of the university program in Germany from the Diploma to the Bachelor/Master model had a direct negative impact on the curricula and the course schedules. The result of which is that the first-year curriculum is overloaded; exercises or practical courses have been dropped altogether from the first term, have been res… Show more

“…Manuscripts that did not include the collection and analysis of data on student outcomes (e.g., learning, perception, self-efficacy, motivation) were excluded (e.g., Dalgarno et al 2009;Fang and Tajvidi 2018;Kang et al 2018;Williams 2010). Additionally, Achuthan et al (2017); Reyes-Aviles and Aviles-Cruz (2018); and Tetour et al (2011) were excluded because these studies focused on remote experiments and/or augmented reality environments. After applying the full complement of inclusion and exclusion criteria, the corpus of data consisted of 25 articles, which were published in 23 different journals that cover the subjects of science and engineering.…”

“…Labvirtual [3] and Mocho [4]. Its use has also been enlarged by the international cooperation which contributes to promote Engineering Education and training in the present scenario of "global engineering", [5][6][7][8][9][10]. This resource not only increases student awareness and motivation in using real data, but also exposes them to other education systems, curricula and learning tools.…”

“…Due to the aforementioned dynamics, it is highly important that undergraduate students are exposed to practical experiences, such as relevant lab exercises [2], [3], [4], internships, and other avenues of practice. Recent advances in highperformance server architectures and virtualization technology allow us to not only avoid the pitfalls of building physical laboratories, but also to introduce significant developments to and expansions of the curriculum.…”
