Integration of Repellents, Attractants, and Insecticides in a “Push-Pull” Strategy for Managing German Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae) Populations

Abstract: "Push-pull" is a behavior manipulation strategy in which behavior-modifying stimuli are integrated with a pest control agent. We evaluated the efficacy of an insecticide bait in combination with attractants ("pull"), repellents ("push"), or both ("push-pull") using a hydramethylnon-based bait, feces-contaminated surfaces as an attractant, and methyl neodecanamide-treated surfaces to repel cockroaches. Both adult males and first-instar German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), chose shelters nearest the att… Show more

“…The push-pull strategy is used in horticulture (Miller and Cowles 1990), forestry (Borden 1997) and for control of veterinary and medical pests (Nalyana et al 2000). This strategy maximizes the control efficacy, sustainability and yield and minimizes negative environmental impacts (Miller and Cowles 1990;Cook et al 2007).…”

“…The L&K strategy relies on the use of a chemical lure (kairomone) that selectively attracts the target organism and a lethal target or trap that subsequently kills or collects the attracted animals. Use of L&K traps/targets in mass trapping schemes has been successful in the control of many agricultural pests (Ridgway et al , 1990; Nalyanya et al , 2000), tsetse flies (Vale, 1993) and, to a limited extent, mosquitoes (Kline, 2006).…”

“…Despite under utilization of push pull strategy in the control of insects of medical importance (Cook et al, 2007), the strategy has been shown to be effective against crop pests (Cowles & Miller, 1992;Nalyanya et al, 2000). Our findings indicate that the strategy could be incorporated in an integrated mosquito control approach to maximize the efficiency of mosquito population-reduction methods through the use of appropriately selected methods.…”
