Integration of Rehabilitation Activities Into Everyday Life Through Telerehabilitation: Qualitative Study of Cardiac Patients and Their Partners

Abstract: Background Implementation of cardiac rehabilitation has not been optimal, with patient participation rates below 50%. Factors that contribute to cardiac patients’ lack of participation in rehabilitation programs are patient motivation, logistical difficulties in getting to the rehabilitation facilities, lack of psychosocial elements, and individualization of activities in the rehabilitation programs. Telerehabilitation has been proposed as a new way to address the challenge of engaging and motivat… Show more

“…To solve this problem, it is crucial to establish standardized telerehabilitation methods. While telecommunicationbased rehabilitation methods have recently been developed [12], the methods have mostly been applied for the rehabilitation of middle-aged patients, with diseases including multiple sclerosis [13], stroke [14] and cardiac disease [15], rather than elderly people. There have been no trials of telerehabilitation focused on preventive rehabilitation for general elderly people.…”

“…7,17−19 Qualitative studies of telerehabilitation outside of the US have reported the importance of individual tailoring and connections between staff and patients for promoting accountability. [20][21][22] Studies have also identi ed the potential barrier of limited peer engagement in remotely delivered CR. 20 Our study demonstrates that providing telephone or video group wellness sessions may address this barrier.…”

“…[20][21][22] Studies have also identi ed the potential barrier of limited peer engagement in remotely delivered CR. 20 Our study demonstrates that providing telephone or video group wellness sessions may address this barrier. The incorporation of technology tools into CR programs can pose challenges, but emerging evidence and our results suggest that it may be possible to include technology tools that meet expected performance, are easy to use, have appropriate training, and have their use supported by staff.…”

“…Physical and Occupational Therapists (P&OTs) have somewhat underutilized technologies available for distance rehabilitation, and the possibilities they provide us to expand on our ideal in-person treatments using telehealth and other online platforms such as Zoom and Skype, and integrate rehabilitation activities into everyday life through Telerehabilitation. 6 Expanding the use of this treatment delivery medium has never been as critical as during the current times. The use of online consulting and care by P&OTs is particularly important when attending to the needs of older adults because they are at increased risk of complications due to COVID 19 and other infections.…”
