Integration of PZT thin films on a microfluidic complex system

Abstract: We present a new way to integrate state of the art sol-gel Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PZT) thin-films on a microfluidic system and the first peristaltic micropump with active microvalves actuated by piezoelectric thin-films. Combination of both technologies enables to benefit of low voltage actuation and high precision. The micropump can produce a 3.6 µl/min flow for 24 V actuation voltage. It is a new step toward low consuming pumps for autonomous microfluidic systems, especially implanted devices for drug delivery.

“…The progression of the microfluid can be seen by the vibration modes in the walls of the micro/nano hydrodynamic system [ 46 ]. Combing the PZT (piezoelectric) component ensures increases the viability and usefulness of the micro/nano dynamical system [ 47 ]. SAW is extensively used for a variety of microscale operations in flow actuation and in microfluidic devices [ 45 ], although this has largely been confined to micron dimension particles to date [ 45 , 48 ].…”

“…Vibrations during the electrochemical anodization process can be generated by using a piezoelectric ceramic material, which vibrates during excitation. It is widely used in various applications, such as microfluidic devices [35,36], particle manipulation [37], sensors [38], etc. Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is an attractive piezoelectric ceramic material with good electromechanical properties; e.g., PZT rings are widely used in the development of various devices [39].…”

“…A microresonator in the design process of an effective microfluidic system is a fundamental part and requires an effective potency to differentiate and process multivariable data [ 21 ]. Many fabrication processes exist [ 22 , 23 , 24 ], but piezoelectrically-actuated or -sensed microresonators are ideal for a large-scale integration to form an array on a single sensing or actuating platform in MEMS.…”
