Integration of proteomics in the molecular tumor board

Johanna Thiery,
Matthias Fahrner

Abstract: Cancer remains one of the most complex and challenging diseases in mankind. To address the need for a personalized treatment approach for particularly complex tumor cases, molecular tumor boards (MTBs) have been initiated. MTBs are interdisciplinary teams that perform in‐depth molecular diagnostics to cooperatively and interdisciplinarily advise on the best therapeutic strategy. Current molecular diagnostics are routinely performed on the transcriptomic and genomic levels, aiming to identify tumor‐driving muta… Show more

“…These studies have delved into the renal proteome, encompassing the proteomes of specific intrarenal structures such as the glomeruli, tubules, and podocytes. Furthermore, they extend to the analysis of the urinary proteome and the protein profiles in dialysate or ultrafiltrate from renal replacement therapies [1,[3][4][5]. The insights garnered from these proteomic analyses have been instrumental in delineating the pathophysiological landscape of renal diseases, identifying novel biomarkers, and uncovering new therapeutic targets.…”

“…Inflammatory processes play a multifaceted role in tumor development and progression [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. While the immune system's inflammatory response is typically a defense mechanism against infections and tissue damage, chronic or persistent inflammation can contribute to the initiation, growth, and spread of certain types of tumors.…”

“…Being focused primarily on the quantitative and qualitative assessment of different levels of gene regulation, Multiomics can bring researchers to a next level of integration of functional data including genomic, epigenetic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic profiles ( Buzdin et al, 2019 ). This makes it possible to perform high throughput in-depth investigations of molecular mechanisms leading to carcinogenesis in individual cases or to generalize the results on the level of bigger patient cohorts or specific tumor molecular classes ( Bonetti et al, 2023 ; Thiery and Fahrner, 2023 ). One of the most important aspects here deals with the immunity-related mechanisms of tumor growth and cancer therapy ( Wang et al, 2021 ).…”
