Our annual conference on global health is setting the stage to create and build global health partnerships with other countries to advocate for social change and promote culturally competent care.Networking and creating global partnerships with other nurses, organizations, and healthcare professionals from other countries leads to global partnerships to improve the health outcomes of the people in the respective countries. The Transcultural Nursing Society provides the framework for applying transcultural theories that link research, education, and practice. To do this, researchers, nursing educators, nurses in practice, and administrators must acquire, develop, or enhance their skills and knowledge in creating these partnerships and ensuring their sustainability.Practicing culturally competent care globally enables us nurses first to become aware of our implicit biases (we are all subject to some biases) and focus on sustaining the global partnerships created while building on what is and expanding on what needs to be. This is particularly important when we are involved with countries with low resources to build capacity to research, educate, and create a practice environment that promotes social change. Todt (2023) addresses strategies to combat implicit bias in nursing and to protect patient and nurse well-being. Todt advocates replacing stereotypes and countering them by reimagining possibilities for the person. Consider the person as a human being but not as a disease condition, imagine what the person might be experiencing, augment opportunities for facilitating the connection between the person and the nurse, and build a partnership between the person and the nurse. Todt also encourages using certain words as medicine that promote healing and well-being. These strategies can be applied globally to achieve social change and optimize health outcomes. As Todt states, one needs to learn to listen and embrace our professional identity, that is, espousing our core values as a nurse and demonstrating them during encounters with people who need our care.Let's make the best of what TCNS aims to do globally and put to work the global and international projects that can promote social change.
