Integration of light delivery for heat assisted magnetic recording

Abstract: Light de6very with spot size converter (SSC) and optical fiber for heat assisted magnetic recording is proposed. It has an advantage in optical efficiency and integration tolerance. sse was fabricated and confirmed its operation. F1y-abiUty of pico s6der with optical fiber was also demonstrated.

“…In real implementation, there is a challenge concerning how to deliver the laser energy to the transducer. One method is to place the laser diode (LD) outside the slider and to deliver the laser energy into the waveguide on the slider (the transducer is located at the exit of the waveguide) by fiber or free space coupling; [1][2][3] Another method is to mount a LD chip on the slider and to couple the laser energy into the waveguide directly. 4) Each method has its advantages and disadvantages.…”
