Integration of Green Energy and Advanced Energy-Efficient Technologies for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants

Abstract: Wastewater treatment can consume a large amount of energy to meet discharge standards. However, wastewater also contains resources which could be recovered for secondary uses under proper treatment. Hence, the goal of this paper is to review the available green energy and biomass energy that can be utilized in wastewater treatment plants. Comprehensive elucidation of energy-efficient technologies for wastewater treatment plants are revealed. For these energy-efficient technologies, this review provides an intr… Show more

“…A review of publications [10,11] on wastewater purification and equipment designs shows that they mainly use earthen open windows and biological treatment, which is energy-intensive. Such treatment facilities occupy large territories, and the purification degree is 65-75 % of the dependent and even less oil products, which values affect the pollution of water resources and the atmosphere.…”

“…For the poor stability and randomness of wind energy itself, it is difficult to use it alone for the power supply of WWTPs. To make up for the shortcomings of wind energy and solar power generation, wind power is mainly combined with solar energy in WWTPs under the current technical conditions, which can realize wind-solar complementary power generation to supply energy to WWTPs [58,59]. This technology has been widely used in the field of wind energy utilization [60,61].…”

“…Intelligent sensors are installed in different locations of WWTPs to collect data on water quality, temperature, pressure, water, and chemical leakage, and transmit these data to data center through the Internet. By using these data, WWTPs can track wastewater flow, monitor wastewater leakage, monitor bacterial and microbial distribution, and achieve other functions [58]. A Spain WWTP using IoT has achieved a great performance.…”
