Integration of Discrete Feature Network Methods With Conventional Simulator Approaches

Abstract: Summary The discrete feature network (DFN) approach offers many key advantages over conventional dual porosity (DP) approaches, particularly when issues of connectivity dominate recovery and reservoir stimulation in fractured and heterogeneous reservoirs. DP models have been developed for complex multiphase and thermal effects, and have been implemented for basin scale modeling. However, DP models address only the dual porosity nature of fractured reservoirs, generally simplifying connectivit… Show more

“…Extensive fracture network characterization has been a critical tool in the development of the Yates field (Snell et al, 2000). The static reservoir models obtained through these characterization studies were used in the performance estimations of different EOR techniques (Winterfeld, 1996;Dershowitz et al, 2002). Monitoring the process using seismic and logging techniques was also observed as a useful tool in the development this field (Snell and Close, 1999).…”

“…Параметры, полученные после масштабирования, представляют собой трещинную пористость, проницаемость трещины и коэффициент взаимосвязи матрица-трещина (сигма). Как описано Дершовитцем [Dershowitz, B., 2000] расчет пористости трещин происходит по формуле (1):…”

“…Oda is an industry-accepted, non-flow-based method for upscaling fracture permeability in DFN models. Since this statistical method does not account for fracture size or connectivity, it should be used only for wellconnected fracture networks 10 . However, it is commonly used on all fracture network types due to reduced processing time over flow-based alternatives, which can be lengthy for large field models.…”
