“…Shenton himself has taken this approach, devising the meta‐model shown in Figure 2 to highlight “elements within information‐seeking action” (Northumbria University, 2003, p. 15). Its nature would appear consistent with the principle of Shen et al (2008, p. 708) that a “domain‐specific meta‐model is a generic model, which captures aspects specific to the domain at hand”. In other situations, a diagram may initially be designed to indicate the areas covered by a particular field but, over time, it comes to be regarded as a model itself.…”

“…Comments and suggestions included the possibility of a topdown specification of COs where a CO is first specified and later its components are defined and the structural validation of a CO specification regarding its conformance to a predefined XML Schema. All participants mentioned that they would be comfortable in specifying other COs with 5SGraph and that they found 5SGraph satisfactory and useful for the task of specifying COs. Later these 5SL-based specifications could be integrated with other application tools (such as code generators like 5SGen [32]) to allow customized modeling and implementation of CO-based DLs. Note that anyone interested in digital libraries and complex objects (or even multimedia integration) would benefit from our approach, mainly extending the CO concepts already mentioned, or using the theoretical 5S framework, or even exploring the 5S applications.…”

“…However, 5S as used by Goncalves et al (2001) defined a "core" or a "minimal" DL, that is, the minimal set of components that make a DL, without which a system/application cannot be considered a DL. Its flexibility as an instrument for analyzing DL development and organization has been demonstrated in several respects (Shen et al 2008;Murthy et al 2010). Table 1 shows how 5S constructs can be employed to describe key concepts of DL such as digital objects, metadata, collections, and services.…”
