Integrating therapies for surgical adult soft tissue sarcoma patients

Abstract: Sarcomas are an uncommon group of over 50 different individual histological malignancies arising from mesenchymal (non-epithelial or connective) tissues. Overall, they constitute 1% of human malignancies with an annual incidence rate of fewer than 5 patients per million. Sarcoma may arise from any mesenchymal cell lineages including fat, muscle, or other connective tissues. Due to the rarity of these groups of malignancies, many subtypes were, and still today, are managed as a single entity. This review focuse… Show more

“…Retroperitoneal sarcomas carry the lowest cure and survival rates by location. This is due to their increased size, late diagnosis, and inability to obtain complete extirpation, due to their close proximity to multiple essential organs and major blood vessels [ 8 , 9 ]. The optimal treatment involves obtaining a margin-negative resection.…”

“…Quiroz and coworkers examine the evolving management of pediatric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) that increasingly must be recognized as a different disease from that arising in older adults (5,6). Milgrom and coworkers similarly provide a balanced review of the overall management strategies for adult sarcoma patients targeted for students, residents, or fellows (7). Similarly, Gbolanhan and O'Neil have provided a very comprehensive review of current adjuvant, and evolving biologic therapies for patients with colon cancer (8).…”
