Integrating several formalisms in order to increase Fault Trees' modeling power

Abstract: The Fault Tree (FT) is a widespread model in the field of Reliability, but its modeling power is very limited. Therefore several FT extensions have been proposed in the literature, each introducing particular modeling primitives, but in a separate way. In this paper, we integrate the primitives coming from three relevant FT extensions (Parametric, Dynamic, and Repairable FT), into the formalism called Generalized FT (GFT). We define each primitive in such a way that it can be combined with any other one. This … Show more

“…In particular, repairable PAND gates can be interpreted in several ways [97,98]: If the second input to a PAND is repaired but fails again it is unclear from the informal description if the PAND should fail. Similar discussions exist for other dynamic gates [99]. Also, the semantics is not clearly defined if the children of a SPARE or FDEP gate are (potentially shared) subtrees.…”

“…2a). Generalized Fault Tree (GFT) [14] adds repair processes to the DFT by adding an explicit repair-triggering mechanism which repairs a single or a group of BEs through predefined failure and repair processes. Boolean logic Driven Markov Processes (BDMP) [15] add repair processes to the BEs which are triggered by Markov processes.…”

“…All intricacies originate from possibly undesired behaviour of, or claims made about, existing semantics. In this work, we omit the concept of repairs, which give rise to several other open questions [16].…”
