Integrating science to address food and health within Global Agenda 2030

Abstract: When recovering from the pandemic, it is important for Planet Earth to address the Global Agenda 2030, including food and water crises, and to bounce forward sustainably. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report and Global Agenda 2030 provide a framework for action and an integrated global science agenda response, involving food and health, is essential. The UN 2021 Summit on Food Systems provides an opportunity for the global science community to come together to address the Summit’s Action Tracks, inclu… Show more

“…We leverage findings from this report to further understand how pro-poor and context-specific, community-based adaptation approaches can aid in building climate resilience. This report has been prepared in the context of studies [2,13] emphasizing the need to integrate science to address food and health-related climate issues within the earth's carrying capacity and to move away from fragmented responses in an increasingly integrated world.…”

“…From the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the impacts of climate stressors on food systems are particularly concerning as SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) is crucial for meeting other goals, including SGDs 3 (health), 1 (poverty), and 13 (climate action). As a result, scientists have highlighted the need for an integrated approach to addressing food and health crises and for consolidated, strategic, evidence-based actions to reduce risks and impacts to meet global societal needs [2,13].…”

“…An integrated global science agenda response which involves food and health is one of the main frameworks for action of the Global Agenda 2030 [ 1 ]. Indeed, since unhealthy diets represent the greatest risk to a substantial rise in the incidence of diet-related non-communicable diseases, providing healthy diets from sustainable food systems is an immediate challenge.…”

“…24 The Declaration is composed of eight subsections, from which it is clear that the Agenda intends not only to reaffirm principles and priorities in sustainable development but also to engage in the implementation of concrete and integrated actions, coordinating science and policy choices through projects centred around these principles. 25 The Declaration makes it clear that the Agenda can only be achieved to its full potential through recognizing everyone's part in contributing to the goals and repeatedly mentions the importance of universal, collective action from stakeholders in both developing and developed nations across the globe. The content of the eight subsections will be briefly summarized below to provide the reader with a sense of the collective approach that is envisioned for achieving the 17 SDGs.…”
