Integrating Pressure Data from Formation Tester Tool and DST to Characterize Deepwater Fields, East Kalimantan, Indonesia

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractIn the last three years, two significant commercial hydrocarbon accumulations in Indonesia deep waters of the Makassar Strait were discovered. These fields are located approximately 16 miles northeast of the giant Attaka Field in 1400 ft to 3400 ft of water. To date more than 40 exploration and appraisal wells have been drilled in both fields and extensive pressure data has been collected by formation tester tool and drillstem testing tool. The pressure data, … Show more

“…For example, because pressure tests provide very little information on the influence of vertical variations in properties unless special tests are designed, we usually accept a very low resolution on this scale, and this assumption may result in a significant underestimate of the value (size) of the resource [ Raghavan et al , 2002; Raghavan and Kuchuck , 2004]. The difficulties involved in describing responses in reservoirs with complex geology by analytical models are given by MacArthur et al [2001].…”

“…This very important parameter is measured and reported through direct measurement of PP using the Modular Formation Dynamics Tester (MDT) (Carnegie et al, 2002;Baouche et al, 2020). Another tool that measures formation pressure is the Repeat Formation Tester (RFT), which is a routine tool in the petroleum industry (MacArthur et al, 2000;Matar et al, 2019;Jafarizadeh et al, 2022). But one of the reasons that has made the use of these tools problematic is that they are expensive and time-consuming to drive (Ma et al, 2018).…”

“…However, this is not practical or cost effective and one must collect data judiciously such that well/reservoir performance can be accurately determined 1 . This is an especially important consideration in the deep water environment where the cost of DST's in every well will not be justified and using lower cost MDT, CMR and/or core samples in more wells will have to suffice.…”
