Integrating parallel file systems with object-based storage devices

Abstract: As storage systems evolve, the block-based design of today's disks is becoming inadequate. As an alternative, objectbased storage devices (OSDs) offer a view where the disk manages data layout and keeps track of various attributes about data objects. By moving functionality that is traditionally the responsibility of the host OS to the disk, it is possible to improve overall performance and simplify management of a storage system. The capabilities of OSDs will also permit performance improvements in parallel f… Show more

“…The T10 standards [8], [19] were proposed to store data and attributes as objects. Based on T10 standards, Seagate, IBM (ObjectStore [7]), and Panasas (PanFS [25]) implemented prototypes [19] and demonstrated the capability of object-based storage systems. RADOS [24]], as part of Ceph [23], is a scalable and reliable object storage service for petabyte-scale storage clusters.…”

“…The SCSI framework that we use to prototype our SSD, tgt [10], has been used in several research projects [8,7]. SCST [6] is a similar framework, but it runs in the kernel rather than in user mode.…”
