Integrating Narrative Therapy Within Rehabilitative Programming for Incarcerated Adolescents

Abstract: The authors implemented a small‐series (N = 8), single‐case research design to assess the effectiveness of a 10‐session narrative therapy intervention with adolescents enrolled in a juvenile boot camp facility. Analysis of participants’ scores on the Brief Symptom Inventory using the percentage of data points exceeding the median procedure (Ma, ) yielded treatment effects indicating that a narrative therapy intervention may be effective for reducing mental health symptoms. It is recommended that this body of r… Show more

“…Four articles investigate the efficacy of interventions with school‐aged children and adolescents using Adlerian play therapy (Meany‐Walen, Kottman, Bullis, & Taylor, ), child‐centered play therapy (Ware Balch & Ray, ), and nature‐based (Swank, Shin, Cabrita, Cheung, & Rivers, ) and peer‐monitoring modalities (Smith, Evans‐McCleon, Urbanski, & Justice, ). Two articles depict the utility of counseling interventions within the rehabilitative experience of individuals who are incarcerated using integrating narrative therapy (Ikonomopoulos, Smith, & Schmidt, ) and cognitive behavior therapy (Cox, Lenz, & James, ). Finally, two articles report the findings of SCRDs used to evaluate training practices intended to increase relational development and multicultural competency (Swan, Schottelkorb, & Lancaster, ) and client–counselor attunement (Schomaker & Ricard, ) among counseling students.…”

“…Second, Lenz (2015) speculated that the use of multiple baseline studies may allow for greater internal validity and inferences related to causal effects. Although four baseline measurements are sufficient in single-case research, employing five baseline measures might have allowed hope and self-esteem scores to stabilize prior to treatment (Ikonomopoulos, Smith, & Schmidt, 2015). Additionally, a possible limitation was the potential for medications and access to the abuser to weaken this study in determining possible reasons for change.…”

“…Ikonomopolous et al (2015) utilized narrative therapy within the incarcerated context. Researchers used a single-case small subject research design to assess the effectiveness of a 10-session narrative therapy intervention in reducing mental health symptoms in youth incarcerated at a juvenile justice facility.…”
