“…In the mid 1990s, Cal Poly also participated in NASA's Aeronautics Multidisciplinary Design and Fellowship (AMDAF) program that aided in the development of computer-based tools that allow design students to perform analysis beyond the scope of their analytic background, including making detailed control systems for their aircraft and analyzing the handling qualities of their designs. 20 Participation in these programs has proven a great help in making our aircraft design program one of the best in the country. While many universities can boast of making contributions to the development of aeronautical science, few universities have maintained their focus on aircraft design as the key feature of their curricula. Cal Poly's aeronautics education has a constant thread running from its inception in 1927 to the present: teaching students with a "learn by doing" philosophy, applying knowledge through hands-on laboratory instruction and realworld design projects. Aeronautics students graduating from Cal Poly have already experienced the rigors and excitement of designing, building, and often flying their concepts long before they begin their careers in the aerospace industry. While this approach to education is not for everyone, it has stood the test of time and has produced notable leaders in the aerospace industry.

This paper discusses various aspects and models of how student design competitions can be integrated into a typical undergraduate curriculum. University models range from no involvement—where the professional society chapter or even a separate group of students operate autonomously—to models where the competition activities are intimately integrated with the capstone senior design requirements. Each model exhibits different strengths and weakness, these being examined in terms of student experiences and feedback, ABET criteria, benefits to the university, and cost to the university. A case study demonstrates the potential for integration and the perspectives of students, advisors, and organizers are considered.

While many engineers in the aerospace engineering profession know that interacting with students is a good idea, few of them know how to do it. Certainly some engineers are asked on occasion to give lectures at various university club meetings, and some are even heavily involved in interacting with students working on various design projects, but the average engineer has little or no interaction with students over the course of their career. A number of companies, including Boeing, have created technical interest groups to encourage mentoring and sharing of corporate knowledge throughout the company. These efforts have been met with varying degrees of success. In an effort to improve this situation, the Boeing Technology Interest Group concept has been modified and expanded to include students within the groups. Concepts for including students (both graduate and undergraduate) and faculty are discussed, including details about how the concept could be integrated into existing research and educational programs. Conclusions are drawn about the feasibility of the concept and suggestions for implementation are made.
