Integrating Modelling and Expert Knowledge for Evaluating Current and Future Scenario of Large Cardamom Crop in Eastern Nepal

Abstract: Large Cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb.) is one of the most valuable cash crop of the Himalayan mountain region including Nepal, India, and Bhutan. Nepal is the world’s largest producer of the crop while the Taplejung district contributes a 30%–40% share in Nepal’s total production. Large cardamom is an herbaceous perennial crop usually grown under the shade of the Uttis tree in very specialized bioclimatic conditions. In recent years, a decline in cardamom production has been observed which is being attributed… Show more

“…Second, building off the earlier point there is a lack of multiscalar and multi-temporal knowledge production for multifunctional landscapes (Stürck and Verburg, 2017). While there is a bewildering diversity of knowledge available to land managers and policymakers (Maharjan et al, 2019;Paltsyn et al, 2019;Chaudhary et al, 2020). Presenting such in formats that appeal to a variety of stakeholders is critical to ensure both the sophistication and the democratic potential of land management.…”

“…The overall growth was highest at mid altitude (1250-1550) in timber tree habitat than in any other altitudes and habitat types sampled (Table 3). Similarly, it was stated that the best growth of Black Cardamom can be found at 1000-2000 m. (Maharjan et al 2019). Furthermore, the dominance of Alnus nepalensis in that habitat could be the important factor for its growth (Table 2).…”

“…On the other hand, the erratic weather can hamper crop growth through increasing pest and diseases, and deteriorating soil nutrients [27,28,29]. The warmer temperature and dry land will trigger more evapotranspiration from the crop leading to poor yield and disease infestation [30,31].…”
