Integrating mass storage and file systems

Abstract: This paper describes current and anticipated work at the University of MichiganÕs Center for Information Technology Integration (CITI) in developing and integrating mass storage with distributed file systems, specifically with the Andrew File System (AFS).After surveying existing mass storage and associated file systems, this paper presents one approach to integrating AFS with mass storage. We consider the mass store itself to be the file system, not a bag on the side of a disk-based file system. This unifying… Show more

“…Antonelli and Honeyman describe the integrated mass storage system under consideration at CITI [Antonelli, 1993]. This system uses the mass store as a first-class data repository, with a disk-based file system and RAM serving as a cache of the mass store.…”

“…We are studying the organization and optimization of an integrated mass storage system based on a cache hierarchy [Antonelli, 1993], similar to that used by Plan 9 from Bell Labs [Pike, 1990, Quinlan, 1991. The system consists of a file system based on a mass store, e.g., magnetic tape or optical-based storage, attached to a file server with several gigabytes of disk cache and possibly hundreds of megabytes of RAM cache.…”

“…For example, [Anto93] describes the need for considering "cost of acquisition" for page replacement in deep-store file systems involving tertiary mass storage. This issue is also addressed forclient-server database systems in which a global memory hierarchy is created by allowing clients to obtain data from other clients that have that data cached~ran92].…”
