Bogotá, the rapidly growing center of an emerging economy in the northern part of South America, is located within a biodiversity hotspot in the tropical Andes. The surrounding mountains harbor the ecosystems Páramo and Bosque Altoandino whose high water retention capacity serves as a "natural water tower" for the city's freshwater supply. Since Bogotá is steadily growing, the city spreads into its peri-urban area, thus threatening its proximal ecosystems. In this study, the land use and land cover change (LULCC) of Bogotá's surrounding area is analyzed with random forest algorithms for the period 1989 to 2016. The basin of the Rio Tunjuelo, a subbasin of the Rio Bogotá, was selected for analysis, as it is typical for the entire area in terms of relief, land use and land cover. A multiple logistic regression analysis is applied to identify different determining factors of the changes. LULCC analysis of the Rio Tunjuelo basin shows an ongoing but abating southward spread of Bogotá's outer rim, an increase of agricultural land, and decrease of natural vegetation. After an initial heavily spatial spread of urbanization in the early 1990s, the speed of urban spread declined in the past years. Statistical analysis implies that the defined natural vegetation classes must be considered as one spatial entity. The probability for their change increases with decreasing distance to established agricultural areas, which indicates human impact as a relevant factor for LULCC. Generally, the explained deviance (D 2) is low and hence it is presumed that the LULCC determining factors are not predominantly found among environmental parameters.

In the national context, there are studies that confirm that the change in the average temperature in the Colombian páramos motivates the expansion of the agricultural frontier and expansive livestock farming and violates the ecosystem services of the hydrographic basins. Therefore, in the present study the effect of climate change on the change in land cover and various components of the water balance of the River Teatinos basin of the Rabanal páramo was evaluated, which is important from the point of view of biodiversity and water supply for the city of Tunja. This evaluation was carried out with the construction of the distributed water balance where the real evapotranspiration was identified depending on the vegetation cover that were characterised through remote sensing tools. The climatic analysis indicates that the increase in temperature explains 62% of the increase in evapotranspiration and the registered increase in rainfall explains 47.2% of the advance in forest cover. The advance of the forest cover (open and gallery forest) generates the contraction of the páramo grass cover. The 75%-reduction in the area of páramo coverage is explained by the expansion of the forest. It was obtained that the crop cover did not have a significant change. In relation to the impact on water availability, no significant change is observed because the increase in precipitation is offset by an increase in evapotranspiration, indicating possible mechanisms of resilience of the hydrographic basin to the phenomenon of global climate change.

Antecedentes y Objetivos: Los páramos albergan una alta diversidad de especies vegetales, muchas de las cuales son endémicas de Colombia. Sin embargo, existen zonas de páramo aún sin explorar, lo que ha generado vacíos de información sobre la distribución de las especies. Por tanto, el objetivo de este estudio es presentar los nuevos registros de especies vegetales para el departamento Boyacá y contribuir al conocimiento de la flora del Páramo de Rabanal.Métodos: Se realizaron muestreos en el Páramo de Rabanal, municipio Samacá (veredas Loma Redonda y La Chorrera), se revisó la distribución de las especies y se realizó una breve descripción de aquellos taxones que son nuevos registros para el departamento.Resultados clave: Se presentan novedades en la diversidad florística del departamento Boyacá. Se identifican ocho nuevos registros de taxa entre angiospermas y pteridofitos, cuatro especies pertenecen a la familia Orchidaceae, dos a Polypodiaceae y las restantes a Bromeliaceae y Campanulaceae, comprendidas en un rango altitudinal de 3200-3301 m.Conclusiones: Esta es la primera aproximación florística para el sector noroccidental del Páramo de Rabanal donde se reportan ocho nuevos registros de distribución de especies vegetales para el departamento Boyacá. Este estudio demuestra la importancia de realizar expediciones botánicas que permitan incrementar el conocimiento de la diversidad, como base para el desarrollo de estrategias para su protección y conservación.
