Integrating Ecosystem Services and Human Demand for a New Ecosystem Management Approach: A Case Study from the Giant Panda World Heritage Site

Abstract: Ecological management based on the ecosystem approach promotes ecological protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. We developed a quantitative approach to identify the ecological function zones at the country-scale, through integrating supply and demand of ecosystem services. We selected the biologically diverse hotspot of Baoxing County, which forms a part of the Sichuan Giant Panda World Heritage Site, to explore the integration of ecosystem services supply and demand for ecosystem management… Show more

“…Ecological function zoning is an essential part of ecosystem management. Its purpose is to conduct targeted protection according to the provision of ecological services, which can fundamentally curb the degradation of the ecological environment, maintain ecosystem balance, improve ecosystem services and improve the supply capacity of ecological products [ 100 , 101 , 102 ].…”

“…The goal of environmental management is the sustainable utilization of ecosystems to meet human demand [ 82 ]. Numerous studies have explored regional management based on the biophysical or economic values of ESs; however, these studies have paid less attention to the regional differences in the effects of driving forces on ESs.…”

“…In the Mountains around Sichuan Basin, managers should be concerned about the potential threat of local sloping farmland. The implementation of soil erosion control measures (e.g., protection of the topsoil layer, application of organic fertilizer and renovation of sloping farmland) and forest conservation projects (e.g., returning farmland to forest, natural forest protection measures, prohibition of timber harvesting) should be coordinated to enhance the resistance of local ecosystems to water erosion [ 82 ]. In the Low Mountains and Hills, local managers should be aware of the negative effects of urbanization and the importance of reasonable urban planning.…”

“…The concept of ecosystem services has now been broadly embraced by governments that see payment for ecosystem services as a tool for stimulating development in rural parts of the country (Bai et al 2016;Fu et al 2019). The concept of ecosystem services needs to build on a strong foundation of economics that extends far beyond simply putting a price tag on nature.…”
