Integrating Design and Optimization Tools: A Designer Centered Study

Abstract: Exploring design options for additively manufactured parts generally requires separate, sequentially applied software for design, analysis, and optimization. To evaluate the effect of integrating these capabilities within a single tool we conducted a controlled human subjects study. Three tools with different degrees of integration were created for two test cases of structural trusses, and it was found that increased integration improved quality, speed, and efficiency of the design process. After a quarter of … Show more

“…Some participant groups in Breneman's excellent study of collaborative satellite design show the scattered focus and poor outcomes that can occur in such contexts [3]. Similarly, lab experiments with convex optimization have shown with individual novice users that the underlying mathematics of a design model can affect design outcomes [10], but have struggled to show any change in this effect with pairs of novice users [37].…”

“…The influence of a design model's material is felt especially in a a design process' earliest stages, where the work is predominantly conceptual and lacks physical prototypes to reference [21,57]. The effects of earlystage design model materials are typically examined through experimental outcomes [10,66,67], but some materials have not been studied in this way.…”

“…They were tasked with finding designs in three "reward regions" and to find designs on the final combined Pareto frontier; participants received greater compensation depending on their performance on these metrics. Each participant was given a ten minute tutorial, 30 min to complete the design challenge, and 10 min to complete a short survey about their experience using the tool after the experiment, based on surveys used in similar experiments [32]. The code used for this experiment is available in an open source GitHub repository.…”
