Strategic problem‐solving enables organizations to pursue opportunities and address emerging threats proactively. However, traditional problem‐solving methods often rely on business processes and organizational procedures, which may not be available at the strategic level. This article investigates potential gaps in strategic problem‐solving methods through a Systematic Literature Review. The study analyses the existing literature on the potential of current problem‐solving methods to identify and resolve root causes of strategic problems when formal business processes and procedures are unavailable. A rigorous literature search process guided by focused research questions examines Problem Structuring Methods, Lean Thinking, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, Balanced Scorecard, SWOT Analysis, and other techniques. The synthesis of findings reveals limitations in strategic root cause analysis. In addition, the study introduces a supplementary decision‐making frame of reference to aid the selection of appropriate methods across problem‐solving, decision‐making, and solution implementation stages. This framework addresses the common challenges decision‐makers face in navigating organizational complexity and choosing suitable approaches, as well as visually maps methods to stages based on Content, Organizational, and Analytical complexity dimensions. The framework builds on the study's findings that using a single methodology may be insufficient for a complete decision process. The proposed decision‐making framework also offers valuable guidance for integrating diverse methods aligned to decision situations.

Purpose:The article juxtaposes risk management methods according to ISO 31000:2018 with selected Lean Management tools to identify potential enhancements for rendering these methods more effective for enterprises. Design/Methodology/Approach: The objective of the research was the identification of Lean Management tools that could serve as support for risk management methods according to ISO 31000:2018. The theoretical-cognitive aim involved a substantive review of subject literature and scientific works within the broad spectrum of risk management. The analysis of the presented problem allowed for the recognition of previously unidentified potential within selected Lean Management tools to enhance the risk management methods outlined in ISO 31000:2018. Findings: The generated conclusions will enable enterprises utilizing ISO 31000:2018 to increase the likelihood of the effectiveness of their risk management methods, as they will be enriched with selected Lean Management tools. Practical Implications: Lean Management tools have been presented in a form conducive to their practical application in enterprises employing risk management methods according to ISO 31000:2018. The conceptual work's outcome includes recommendations for enterprises utilizing risk management methods according to ISO 31000:2018, concerning the feasibility of implementing these methods with selected Lean Management tools. Originality/Value: The authors present the possibilities of utilizing selected Lean Management tools in enterprises employing risk management methods according to ISO 31000:2018. The implementation of the presented Lean Management tools requires actions leading to certain changes in the functioning of the enterprise, which may contribute to reducing the likelihood of undesirable events.

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to provide an introduction into Hoshin Kanri and how it has been used with other methodologies and frameworks. Additionally, factors that impact successful Hoshin Kanri implementation and future research opportunities are explored.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was conducted to determine the methodologies and frameworks that have previously been explored and identify factors that lead to successful Hoshin Kanri implementation as it relates in the Western world.FindingsEven though Hoshin Kanri has been used to a limited extent for decades in the West, there is still relatively little published research on the topic. In the period reviewed most published research was performed in the UK or USA. In addition, most years had less than two publications (the exception being five in 2020).Research limitations/implicationsThis literature review was primarily focused on the manufacturing sector, publications from 1990–2021, and available in English.Practical implicationsCurrent practitioners may use the research in this review to improve their current Hoshin Kanri practices using the techniques mentioned as a means of continuous improvement or to build a new framework for their own needs.Originality/valueThis paper makes an important contribution to the study of Hoshin Kanri as it provides: (1) an updated literature review regarding the study and application of Hoshin Kanri, (2) a qualitative analysis of alternative methodologies and frameworks to traditional Hoshin Kanri and (3) success factors when considering implementation of Hoshin Kanri within an organization and researchers with potential ideas for future research.
