The robotics curriculum is one of the most common and popular curricula for stimulating students' interest in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The purpose of this study was to develop a robotics curriculum that highly integrates STEM and uses open software and hardware, and to test its effects on high school students' learning outcomes, interest, and perceptions of STEM. The study involved 82 Grade 10 students; divided into two groups, the experimental group experienced an integrated robotics STEM course, whereas the comparison group participated in a curriculum with commercial robotics. After a semester, the quantitative and qualitative data showed that the experimental group reported significantly more positive perceptions of integrated STEM, with strengthened knowledge, interest, and career orientation towards related fields. The findings of this study provide suggestions for STEM curriculum development.

Use of smart home technology offers significant potential for everyday energy savings for each citizen. There are numerous schemes successfully implemented in western countries related to energy conservation. In Indian context, the issues encountered are that of diversity and consumer literacy about electricity consumption. In this paper, a novel approach is presented to address this issue on an interface designed to provide users with the real time energy consumption of appliance specific data. The proposed system uses wireless sensor networking for sensing and transmitting remotely monitored data gathered from an intelligent hardware system comprising of current sensors followed by a current calculating unit and a cloud server for communication and storage of data. XBee® transceivers, which are economical and reliable, are installed on electric appliances and a commonly available open source platform of Arduino microcontroller which calculates the current readings gathered by Hall Effect current sensor ACS712. The software system transfers the UID (Unique Identification) of each appliance to the cloud in order to uniquely identify each appliance. A user-friendly interface is developed to provide timely updates of the electricity consumption of the connected appliances. The system provides a real time analysis of the electricity consumed by individual appliances connected to the system.

Resumen: La navegación autónoma de robots es uno de los principales problemas entre los robots debido a su complejidad y dinamismo, ya que depende de las condiciones ambientales como la interacción entre ellos mismo, personas o cualquier cambio sin previo aviso en el entorno. En este trabajo, hemos propuesto la aplicación de técnicas evolutivas para la navegación autónoma de robots. El objetivo de este artículo es desarrollar el control de movimiento de un robot para alcanzar una meta en un entorno desconocido, donde los comportamientos de bajo nivel son obtenidos a través de redes de neuronas artificiales y posteriormente han sido evolucionados mediante algoritmos evolutivos. Para este propósito ROS y el TurtleBot 2 han sido utilizados. In this work, we have proposed the application of evolutionary techniques for autonomous navigation of robots. The objective of this work is to develop the motion control for a robot to reach a goal in an unknown environment, where the low level behaviors are obtained through artificial neural networks and subsequently have been evolved by evolutionary algorithms. For this purpose ROS and robot TurtleBot 2 are used. The paper ends with a critical discussion of the experimental results.
