The Lower Cretaceous Viking Formation is a siliciclastic unit that occurs in the subsurface of Alberta in the Western Canadian sedimentary basin. This study focuses on a lowstand paleoshoreline trend extending along strike between two hydrocarbon-producing fields, Joarcam and Judy Creek (250 km NW). The Viking Formation in these fields records depositional thicknesses ranging from 20 to 30 m. Between these two fields, however, the formation is anomalously thick (45-60 m), complicating the recognition and correlation of key stratigraphic surfaces. Marine flooding surfaces above and below the Viking Formation are routinely employed as stratigraphic datums in order to remove postdepositional deformation and facilitate the development of a sequence stratigraphic framework. However, as each successive surface is employed as the datum, the other flooding surfaces within the formation become distorted, resulting in unrealistic depositional geometries. These geometries are best explained to be the result of structural readjustments during Viking deposition. The Precambrian lithosphere of the Canadian Shield forms the Western Canadian sedimentary basin basement, with major structures previously mapped using gravity and magnetic anomaly studies. Locally, the increased accommodation observed within the Viking Formation of central Alberta is attributed to differential reactivation of the Paleoproterozoic Snowbird tectonic zone basement structures, which flank the areas of anomalously thick deposits and trend approximately normal to the regional strike of the Western Canadian sedimentary basin. The Snowbird tectonic zone faults are interpreted to have been reactivated during renewed tectonic loading in the southern Canadian Cordillera during Aptian-Albian time, causing subtle readjustments along basement faults that caused variable syndepositional subsidence. By selecting successive datums, the gross Viking interval can be recognized to have accumulated prior to, during, and following structural reactivation.

Reconnaissance exploration for ore mineralization in Kaiama and environ have been carried out using integrated geological mapping and geochemical survey of soils, stream sediments and exposure of pegmatite/quartz veins. This was done in order to define the ore forming elements distribution and recognising type and area of possible mineralization in Kaiama and environ.. Eighteen samples were collected and analyzed for major and trace elements by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE) methods. Petrological description of thin sections of rocks was also carried out under the petrological microscope.The rocks underlying Kaiama consist of amphibolites, mica schists and granites along with fracture controlled mostly sheared mineralised pegmatite and quartz veins The fractured filled veins mainly trend NW-SE, NNE-SSW and E-W, N-S as to compare closely to the general trend of structures resulting from Pan-African orogeny. The mineralisation notably includes columbite-tantalite, rutile, cassiterites, ilmenites, wolframites, gold and gem stones. Geochemically, the trace elements concentrations shows significant anomalous concentrations of Sn, S, Ti, W, Au, Cu, Ti and Nb in the soil and stream sediments and Sn, W, and Nb in the veins. In addition, Zn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cd, Sb, Mo, V, As, Pb, Rb occurs in less significant anomalous concentrations in all the geologic media. The anomalous magnitude however decreases from soil to stream sediments and least in the veins. Further exploration work should be concentrated on soils and stream sediments towards delineating the possible ore deposit in the area of Kaiama and environs.

The application of geostatistics to data obtained from mineral prospecting can provide useful information for evaluating mineralization potential. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the spatial distribution of elements, establish relationships and understand chemical associations during mineral paragenesis in the studied area of Kaiama, Northcentral Nigeria. Major Oxide and Trace element analysis were carried out on 17 samples collected from three geologic media which are stream sediments, soils, and veins. The Geochemical results were subjected to multivariate statistical treatments in the form of correlation matrix (CM), Factor analysis (PCA), along with hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) in order to classify the elements into groups that may signify common origin. All multivariate statistical tests were performed using SPSS (PASW Statistics 18) for Windows. The trace element geochemical composition shows significant anomalous concentration of Sn, W, Ta, Ti, and Fe. Au, Cu shows moderate to very high correlation. Areas of significant anomalous concentration were in the 2-4 km eastern outskirt of Kaiama and as well as 6-10 km south of Kaiama. Sn-W were more to the eastern outskirt while Sn-Ta were more in the southern part of Kaiama. All other trace elements V, Ni, Sr, Sb, Cd etc. shows low concentration with each other and are not significant in the mineralization of Kaiama. Further exploration work should be concentrated on soils and stream sediments towards delineating the possible ore deposit in the area of Kaiama and environs.
