to evaluate the efficiency of some chemical weed control treatments as pendimethalin(Stomp extra45.5%CSatrate at rate of 1.7 Liter/fed.),butralin(Amex 48% EC at rate of 2.5 Liter/fed.) and fluroxypyr (Starane 20% EC at rate of 200 cm 3 /fed.) alone or with hand hoeing once or twice on weed, balady garlic yield and yield components and residues limits for herbicides. The obtained results revealed that hand hoeing treatment at three times gave highest fresh and cured yield followed by treatments with Stomp extra 1.7 L. /fed.+ two hand hoeing and Starane 200 cm 3 /fed.+ two hand hoeing. While the lowest values of fresh and cured yield were obtained from control (without) followed by Starane, Amex and Stomp extra alone. These results may be due to the better effect of hoeing on removing weeds than herbicides and poor effect of herbicides in killing the weeds specially when used alone. There are residual effects for using herbicides but there were below detection limit 0.01 ppm for butralin 48% at 2.5 L/ fed. & pendimethalin 45.5% at 1.7 L/fed. and 1.0 ppm for fluroxypyr 200 cm 3 /fed. in cloves.

Metribuzin is an herbicide widely used in the control of weeds in crops such as soybean, potato and tomato. However, there is suspicion of intoxication in crops cultivated in succession due to the residual effect of the product in the soil. As such, our goal was to evaluate the residual effect of metribuzin in the soil on the growth of garlic, onion and beans plants. Three experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, in a randomized block design, with four replications. Each experiment corresponded to the evaluated crop: garlic, onion or beans. The treatments consisted of different metribuzin concentrations in the soil (0; 6; 12; 24; 48; 96; 144; 192; 240 and 480 ppb). Visual intoxication was evaluated at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after emergence (DAE) of the crops and dry matter at 28 DAE. Intoxication was identified in the garlic and bean plants at metribuzin concentration of 96 ppb, with maximum impact of 55 and 63%, respectively, at 28 DAE. In the onion crop, symptoms of intoxication arose at 40 ppb, and from 14 DAE onwards, plant death was noted at herbicide concentrations from 240 to 480 ppb. The dry matter of the bean and onion plants was reduced by the presence of herbicide in the soil, while garlic plant growth was not affected. Residues of metribuzin in the soil can hinder successive planting of garlic, onion or bean crops. It was concluded that garlic, onion and bean plants are sensitive to the residual effect of metribuzin in the soil.Resumo -O metribuzin é um herbicida amplamente utilizado para o controle de plantas daninhas em culturas como a soja, a batata e o tomate. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate various weed management options on garlic (Alium sativum L.) production in Northeastern Croatia. This study focus on how different strategies of weed control affects weed community composition and economic benefit of weed management. An experiment was arranged as a complete block design with three different weed management strategies: chemical control (PRE EM and POST EM), mechanical control (three times during the season), and combination of chemical and mechanical treatments, together with weeded checks. Data on weed density, fresh above weed biomass and garlic yield per m2 were collected at the end of the growing season, and were subjected to statistical and economic analysis. The mayor weeds found in the experimental plots were: Sorghum halepense, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Cirsium arvense and Chenopodium album. The various weed growth (density and biomass) and yield varied with application of weed management practices. Significantly lower values of weed density and fresh above weed biomass were recorded on plots with mechanical and combination of chemical and mechanical treatments compared to weeded check. Chemical application gave in this study insufficient weed control and resulted in lower yields compared to the mechanical treatments and combination of mechanical and mechanical weed control. The best cost: benefit ratio was observed on treatment with combination of chemical and mechanical weed control and can be successfully applied to boost up the bulb yield in garlic and to harvest the maximum profit for farmers.
