Integrated trispectrum detection from BOSS DR12 NGC CMASS

Davide Gualdi,
Licia Verde

Abstract: We present the first detection of the integrated trispectrum (i-trispectrum) monopole and quadrupoles signal from BOSS CMASS NGC DR12. Extending the FKP estimators formalism to the Fourier transform of the four-point correlation function, we test shot-noise subtraction, Gaussianity of the i-trispectrum data-vector, significance of the detection and similarity between the signal from the data and from the galaxy mock catalogues used to numerically estimate the covariance matrix. Using scales corresponding to mo… Show more

“…Another promising avenue is via the inclusion of higher-order statistics, such as the galaxy trispectrum or fourpoint correlation function and beyond. Initial forecasts suggest that the statistics can yield impressive constraining power on σ 8 [1857], arising due to degeneracy breaking, and recently, the first detections of such quantities have been made [1858,1859]. Of course, their use will require the development of rigorous theoretical models [1860] that must be tested on simulations (including systematic effects) before their application to data.…”

“…On the other hand, the trispectrum is expected to be an important probe of primordial non-Gaussanities (Gualdi et al 2021a,b), as well as parity-violating new physics (Cahn et al 2021). The LSS analysis with trispectrum has just begun recently (Philcox et al 2021;Gualdi & Verde 2022), and the high cost of including the trispectrum in future analysis demands a detailed study of the information contained in the trispectrum, similar to what did for the bispectrum, is needed to assess how practical the trispectrum is to use.…”

“…(2.25) Note that the estimator equation (2.15) is optimal under the Gaussian assumption but may not remain optimal when the trispectrum contributes significantly to the covariance matrix. Since the relative contribution from the trispectrum rises toward small scales [66,67], we expect that the noise power spectrum P N full (k) would saturate beyond some q max . Later, we verify the statements by comparing numerically the two noise power spectra P N full (k) and P N G (k) for the two nonlinear density realizations: 2LPT [68] and GridSPT [53].…”
