Integrated Team Approach to the Design, Construction, Start Up, and Operation of the World's Most Modern Drilling Rig

Abstract: Summary This paper describes how an integrated team approach was applied to the design, construction, start up, and ultimately the operation of a high technology drilling rig. The rig was built to conform, wherever possible, to the stringent regulations in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. The paper, which also contains a technical description of the rig itself, also addresses the issue of automation and it's effect on manning of a complex drilling unit and the importance of high quality… Show more

“…Shortly after the introduction of drilling operator chairs (McGill 1991;Tonnesen et al 1995) to drive the drilling machinery, simulation environments were introduced by the manufacturers of drilling control systems to train rigsite personnel in using their equipment (Croucher 1999;Porteous et al 1999). The latest versions of those training environments include advanced 3D visualization of the rig floor and use HIL for accurate reproduction of the drilling-machine behavior.…”

“…Shortly after the introduction of drilling operator chairs (Tonnesen, 1995)(McGill, 1991 to drive the drilling machineries, simulation environments have been used by the manufacturers of drilling control systems (DCS) to train rig site personnel in using their equipment (Croucher, 1999) (Porteous, 1999). The latest versions of those training environments include advanced 3D visualization of the rig floor and uses hardware in the loop (HIL) for accurate reproduction of the drilling machine behavior.…”
