Basic sanitation services are essential for promoting public health and for mitigating environmental damage. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate a wastewater treatment system consisting of anaerobic sludge blanket reactor and biofilter, as an alternative for the decentralized wastewater treatment in the municipality of Rio Rufino - Santa Catarina. The system was evaluated for its efficiency of removal of fecal coliforms, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, soluble chemical oxygen demand, phosphorus, Total Kjhedal Nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, sedimentable solids and maintenance of the hydrogen potential in the effluent. The treated effluent had its parameters compared to the standards established by Resolution 430/2011 of the Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente and Law 14.675 / 2009 of the State of Santa Catarina. It was also performed the estimate of the daily biochemical oxygen demand load, originated by the population of the municipality, and its respective impact. The effluent treated by the proposed system, when properly installed, follows what was established by the legislation, which implies in reducing the impacts caused by the municipality. In this way, the system can be an interesting alternative when it comes to decentralized wastewater treatment.

The present research intended to investigate the toxicity abatement of domestic wastewater after passing a biosystem composed of a constructed wetland (CW) followed by a pond. The wastewater was generated in a tourism house in a rural and mountainous context and passed through a septic tank before being diverted to a CW followed by a pond. A battery of ecotoxicological tests, comprising microalgae (Raphidocelis subcapitata), macrophytes (Lemna minor), cladocerans (Daphnia magna), and bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri), was used to assess the toxicity of the wastewater collected before and after the CW and the water of the pond. Physicochemical parameters (pH, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, phosphates, ammonium, and nitrate) were also determined. The CW was able to remove carbon and nutrients from the water with a concomitant reduction of its toxicity. This study, reinforced the added value of using toxicity tests as a complement to CW operational monitoring to validate the solution and to analyze possible readjustments that may be required to improve efficiency. This study lends further support to the claim that CWs can be a sustainable solution for treating small volumes of domestic wastewater in a rural context.

A novel Si–Al porous clay material W (reprocessed from ceramic waste) was used for Acidovorax sp. strain PM3 immobilization to promote the growth of strains and improve nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance in water treatment systems. The porous clay material W was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy indicating that porous clay material W was a type of mullite with 63.52 m2/g specific surface area. After immobilization, the maximum biomass increased 2.7 times the specific growth rate and the removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia (NH4+–N), and total phosphorus (TP) by the immobilized PM3 were 42.99, 29.19, and 11.76% higher than the free strain after 24 h. The Monod equation showed that the growth rate and processing speed of immobilized PM3 increased. The maximum adsorption capacities of COD and NH4+–N onto porous clay material W were 2.33 and 0.32 mg/g on the basis of Langmuir isotherm. The removal capacities of COD, NH4+–N, and TP by the immobilized PM3 were 588.24, 20.37, and 5.06 mg/l, respectively, as shown by kinetic studies. These results demonstrated that porous clay material W could improve the efficiency of microbial nitrogen and phosphorus removal, and the immobilized microorganism system could effectively treat domestic sewage. The adsorption isotherms can well describe the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of COD and NH4+–N on porous clay material W is 2.33 and 0.32 mg/g, respectively. Kinetic studies showed that the removal capacity of immobilized PM3 to COD, NH4+–N, and TP was 58.824, 20.37, and 5.06 mg/l, respectively.
