Integrated simultaneous dual-modality imaging endospeckle fluoroscope system for early colon cancer diagnosis

Abstract: Abstract. An integrated and flexible fiber optic endoscope system for diagnostic investigations in medical cavities using specially designed probe distal and proximal ends so as to facilitate simultaneous speckle correlation analysis and fluorescence spectroscopic imaging is presented.

“…Biomedical optics has been used for diagnostic and therapeutic applications by imaging and measuring parameters of healthy and diseased sites. [1][2][3] It plays an important role in diagnostic medical applications as it can highlight functional or structural changes in the body leading to diseases. [4] Uveal melanoma is a type of intraocular cancer which can occur in the iris and if left untreated, can lead to blindness and deaths.…”

“…Different types of optical probes are employed as endoscopes in minimally-invasive in-vivo diagnosis systems. The probes can be made with single mode fibers, multi-mode fibers [12] or image fiber bundles [13]. These probes can function following different modalities like spectral characterization or imaging.…”

“…Multi-modality optical probes have been reported which can be used for colon cancer detection [13]. These probes collect the integrated signal from the sample which reduces the spatial specificity of locating the region of interest.…”

“…The colon phantom procured from (Simulab Corp.) was used as the test sample in the present study. The phantom tissue was reported to exhibit similar optical and thermal properties as with the human colon tissue and has been employed in various studies (Sujatha, Murukeshan et al 2003, Sujatha and Murukeshan 2004, Murukeshan and Sujatha 2005, Murukeshan and Sujatha 2007. The deviations of the plot from linear behaviour are due to the contribution of an additional phase by the thermoelastic bending of the thermally thick sample.…”
