“…Although it is poorly documented in this sedimentary sequence, previous studies (Jacobs et al 1996) suggest that it could represent the onset of the CM7 event. This is consistent with later results from Spezzaferri et al (2001), who have documented the occurrence of CM7 in a comparable stratigraphic position in the nearby Hyblean Plateau (Sicily), described below.…”

“…The sedimentary section here termed the 'Palazzolo Section' spans 90 m through the upper part of the Tellaro Formation and the lower part of the Palazzolo Formation, recording deposition during the middle Miocene into the late Miocene (Mutti et al 1999;Spezzaferri et al 2001). The Tellaro Formation consist of marls and clay-rich carbonate mudstones containing planktonic and, subordinantly, benthic foraminifers and grades upward into the Palazzolo Formation, which consists of packstone to wackestone strata deposited in an outer neritic setting.…”

“…Since at ODP Site 976 few upper Miocene sediments were recovered (Messinian-Tortonian/Serravallian; Comas et al, 1996), the reference section for the Middle Miocene can be considered the one drilled at DSDP Site 372, yielding a complete succession of Langhian bioevents (Abdul Aziz et al, 2008). Bolboforma compressispinosa, B. laevis and B. subfragoris, which are abundantly present in Middle to Late Miocene successions of the Western Mediterranean Sea (Spezzaferri et al, 2001), are also recorded at Site 372 (Poag and Karowe, 1986). Their presence in the foraminiferal assemblages of the mud-breccia suggests a strict affinity with the sedimentary sequence of Site 372.…”

“…Faunal data in association with geochemical criteria (Mutti et al 1997(Mutti et al , 1999Spezzaferri et al 2001) suggest that nutrient supply was a major factor in the control of facies development and variability. Recently, Mutti and Bernoulli (2003) have provided further evidence of the role of trophic resource control on the basis of a study of sea-floor lithication in non-tropical ramp carbonates from the Maiella (Italy).…”
