Integrated navigation and communication system based on OFDM

Abstract: In this paper, an Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) signal based on the IEEE 802.16 WiMAX standard with integrated navigation and communication capabilities is presented. The work has been carried out by DEIMOS Space under ESA contract for the Feasibility Study for a Reduced Planetary Navigation and Communication System (PLANCOM), which aims the definition of a local infrastructure for future Mars and Moon exploration mission using an integrated, flexibly and low-cost approach. An integrate… Show more

“…An OFDM signal splits a high-rate data stream into N complex parallel lower rate streams transmitted simultaneously over N orthogonal narrowband subcarriers, each carries one symbol (Serant et al 2010;Thevenon et al 2009;Proakis 2008;Diez et al 2010). Figure 2 describes the OFDM modulation.…”

“…Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is the most popular MCM technique used in wireless and cellular communications. OFDM is preferable in point-to-point communication as well as unmanned aerial vehicle UAV wireless communications [4] because it can be implemented with the least amount of complexity [5]. However, it has a number of challenges, such as low spectral efficiency and significant out-of-band emissions [6].…”

“…However, this only considers the transmission of navigation messages, and it cannot be used in satellite communication systems. Diez J. et al [11] developed an integrated navigation and communication system based OFDM modulation. However, this is only for special occasion.…”
