“…To estimate how frequently RO measurements from a constellation of low Earth-orbiting satellites will encounter heavy precipitation in nature, orbital simulation experiments were carried out where the RO ray paths were superimposed on the nearest 30minute GPM IMERG precipitation product [27]. A number of different orbit scenarios were examined, varying the number of satellites, orbital altitudes and inclinations, and the relative time separation between satellites in the constellation configuration.…”

“…Section 4 examines several possible orbital strategies for implementing such a closely spaced RO constellation. To estimate how frequently RO measurements onboard a constellation "train" of orbiting satellites will encounter heavy precipitation in nature, orbital simulation experiments were carried out where the RO ray paths from a foursatellite constellation were superimposed on actual 30minute precipitation fields from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) [26] Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) precipitation product [27].…”

“…For estimating the changes of σ 0 due to precipitation, global precipitation measurement (GPM) data were used, namely integrated multi-satellite retrievals for GPM (IMERG) with a 30 min period of precipitation accumulation [30]. The interval of observations were 27 April 2018-November 2018.…”

“…As IMERG products are provided at 30 min temporal resolution, MW retrievals are obtained either from calibrated conical-scan microwave radiometer or cross-track-scan microwave retrieval, essentially from the one that is closer to the half-hour window. IR estimates are provided by various sensors (refer to [21] for more details). The IMERG algorithm is run twice in near-real time and once after monthly gauge data become available to generate the following multi-satellite products: (i) early, available~4 h after the observation time allowing quick assessment for flood and landslide forecasts; (ii) late, available~12 h after the observation time, mainly for agricultural applications like drought monitoring, crop yield forecasts, and crop production; and (iii) final, availablẽ 2 months after observation for research applications.…”
