Integrated Modeling of Agronomic and Water Resources Management Scenarios in a Degraded Coastal Watershed (Almyros Basin, Magnesia, Greece)

Abstract: The scope of this study is to assess the effects of agronomic and water resources management scenarios on groundwater balance, seawater intrusion, and nitrate pollution and the comparison of the developed scenarios relative to the current crop production and water management regime in the coastal agricultural Almyros basin in the Thessaly region, Greece. Agronomic and water resources scenarios have been simulated and analyzed for a period of 28 years, from 1991 to 2018. The analysis has been conducted with the… Show more

“…The idea of advocating for IWM implies that most groundwater resources are better managed at the river basin level (Conservation Ontario 2010). Furthermore, Lyra et al (2022) propose an approach of using innovative models and simulations of the multiscale dynamics of surface and groundwater systems to potentially solve complex issues connected to water-related management. These goals may be even more challenging in light of recent global warming trends, and therefore, the management of water resources within a watershed should be developed in accordance with other factors.…”

“…Lyra et al [8] highlight the effects of agronomic and water resources management scenarios on groundwater balance, seawater intrusion, and nitrate pollution and the comparison of the developed scenarios relative to the current crop production and water management regime in the coastal agricultural Almyros basin in the Thessaly region, central Greece. This area is characterized by intensive agricultural activities and increased water needs for irrigation purposes.…”

“…These papers delineate four main themes concerning the groundwater management. The first theme concerns modelling efforts supporting the sustainable management of aquifer systems [8,9]. The second theme is focused on groundwater vulnerability assessments against external pollution, focusing on groundwater quality management [10][11][12][13].…”
