Integrated membrane bioreactors modelling: A review on new comprehensive modelling framework

Abstract: In particular, the framework aims to guide researchers and managers in pursuing good performances of MBRs in terms of effluent quality, operating costs (such as membrane fouling, energy consumption due to aeration) and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.

“…Similarly, Smith et al (2014) found improved Puptake in the aerobic reactor with DO concentration maintained at 2mgL −1 . Another study (Fu et al, 2009) with A/O-MBR demonstrated that a concentration of 2.5 mgO 2 L −1 is enough to remove almost 90% indicators such as effluent quality index (EQI), membrane fouling, aeration, operating costs index (OCI), energy consumption, and mitigation of GHG emissions (Mannina et al, 2021).…”

“…It is notably the case when the filtration system is coupled with a biological process and form a MBR treatment process. This situation was well motivated in [6] where it is mentioned: "[...] such a system cannot be modelled by a "biological compartment" followed by a model describing the physical behavior of the membrane: the coupling of both must be necessarily taken into account to finally come up with what will be named hereafter an "integrated model". Thus, when the inputs of the whole system vary with time, the parameters of the functions fp and fr in (1) would also change with time.…”

“…Such models can be obtained from data (as in our approach) or from mass-balance models coupling biokinetics models (based on the well-known ASM models) with models describing the dynamics of membrane fouling, cf. for instance [6]. In this work, such detailed models are used for simulating the actual system (as a "virtual process") while a simple control design model is obtained using the data generated with the detailed model.…”

“…The commercial viability of mAbs which are in early development stages is highly dependent on the technoeconomic performance of the industrial scale manufacturing process (Badr and Sugiyama, 2020). The incentive to improve patient wide access to these biotherapeutics drives the need for accurate in silico techniques to dynamically simulate reactions to understand metabolic networks (Morchain and Fonade, 2009;Lira-Parada et al, 2021;Mannina et al, 2021). These keen pursuits motivate the need for dynamic optimisation to be applied to upstream processes, so as to provide control strategies for improved culture productivity (Bibila and Robinson, 1995).…”
