Integrated management strategies for red rot disease of sugarcane

Abstract: Field experiments were conducted during 2006-07 and 2007-08 crop seasons at IISR institute farm, Lucknow to find out the impact of Integrated Disease Management (IDM) practices over Non-Integrated Disease Management (NIDM)i.e. normal package of practices of cane cultivation on red rot incidence, yield and quality parameters of sugarcane in plant and ratoon crops of moderately susceptible variety CoSe 92423. It was observed that in both plant and ratoon, IDM practices reduced red rot incidence, enhanced growth … Show more

“…Ten races of C. falcatum have been reported in India based on host differentials [18]. If a fairly large number of isolates of the fungus obtained from different cane varieties or geographic areas are studied on artificial culture media, considerable variation in the type of growth and colour of the fungus colony usually is seen.…”

“…Since then a number of red rot epidemics have been reported, especially in eastern Uttar Pradesh, northern Bihar and pockets of Punjab. These epidemics have resulted in failure of some important Indian commercial sugarcane varieties [18][19][20].…”

“…Arx and E. Müller), is the most destructive disease of sugarcane worldwide and poses a major threat in successful cultivation of sugarcane (Satyavir, 2003;Duttamajumder, 2008). Ten races of C. falcatum have been reported in India based on host differentials (Singh, 2008). Several epiphytotics of red rot have resulted in failure of some important Indian commercial sugarcane varieties (Singh, 2008).…”

“…Red rot epidemics cause significant annual losses of sugarcane yields that may reach 100% under conditions favourable for disease development. Several epiphytotics of red rot have resulted in failure of some important Indian commercial sugarcane varieties (Singh, 2008). The pathogen shows a great diversity in virulence as a number of pathotypes are known to occur in nature.…”
