Integrated management of natural resources in the Ecuador Highlands

Abstract: The Andean region of Ecuador is characterized by extreme poverty caused by low agricultural productivity, limited off-farm opportunities, and lack of access to markets. Poverty is related to degradation of natural resources as lagging agricultural productivity leads to incursions into fragile areas and use of erosive farming techniques on steeply sloped hillsides. Food production in fragile areas degrades soil and water resources, contributes to deforestation and loss of biodiversity, and reduces productive po… Show more

“…Illangama producers are indigenous and their families have been present in the area for generations. The Alumbre sub-watershed covers 16,000 acres and ranges from 6,600 to 9,200 fasl with agriculture found throughout (Barrera, Escudero, Alwang & Andrade, 2012). Agriculture is mainly a mixed maize-bean system, with nearly continual maize cropping.…”

“…1). Excessive use of agrochemicals and machinery has led to a steady rise in production costs and a significant reduction in yields (Barrera et al, 2012; Barrowclough et al, 2016; Escudero et al, 2014).…”

“…Households in the watershed obtain their income from rotations that include annual crops (potato, barley, and bean), pasture (used for grazing by dairy cows), and fallow (Barrera et al, 2012). Chela (2008) showed that pasture‐based farming systems are much less susceptible to erosion than those with permanent or annual crops.…”

“…For example, the farmers Maria Palag and Matias Paguay report that these practices and new technologies have helped increase the milk production from 3 to 4 L (0.8 to 1.1 gal) per cow to 6 to 8 L (1.6 to 2.1 gal) per cow (Maria Palag, personal communication, August 18, 2011) and that the potato production has doubled to tripled (Matias Paguay, personal communication, August 18, 2011). Across the watershed, average yields in crops and animal production have increased dramatically as a result of the SANREM interventions (Barrera et al 2012). …”
