Integrated Magnetotelluric (MT), Gravity and Seismic Study of Lower Kutai Basin Configuration

Abstract: This work describes a subsurface basin configuration of the Lower Kutai Basin (hereinafter LKB) in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, as inferred from combination of magnetotelluric (MT), seismic, and gravity data. LKB is structurally controlled mainly by the Samarinda Anticlinorium extending in a NNE-SSW direction and is one of the most prolific hydrocarbon basins in Indonesia. The phase tensor analysis of MT data from most stations and frequencies exhibited a 2D character with a relatively low skew (-3° < β <… Show more

“…Nevertheless, from the remaining period range valid for 2D modeling, i.e., 0.0001 to 100 sec., we expect that the MT data would be beneficial in obtaining overall subsurface resistivity structure of the area at a regional or subregional scale as was proven in another similar case with less dense MT stations distribution (e.g. Irawati et al, 2022). Rose diagrams and skew angle β for MT stations at lines AA', BB', and CC' are summarized in Fig.…”

“…Exploration and production in several countries in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, has substantial quantities of shale gas and strong possibilities for it [5]. One of the prospective hydrocarbon producers in Indonesia is located in the Kutai Basin, East Kalimantan [6], [7]. The stratigraphy of the Kutai Basin consists of four main formations, namely the Pamaluan, Pulaubalang, Balikpapan, and Kampung Baru formations, with the Pamaluan Formation showing maturity achievements with mature to over-mature categories based on maturity analysis through rock-eval and pyrolysis [8], [9].…”
