Integrated furfural and first generation bioethanol production: process simulation and techno-economic analysis

Abstract: -Furfural is a base chemical with a wide range of applications and with a great opportunity for market growth in the near term. Derived from biomass, its production may be incorporated to the Brazilian chemical industry using sugarcane bagasse as feedstock. In this context, the integration of a furfural plant to a first generation bioethanol facility, within the biorefinery concept, was simulated considering different scenarios compared to an autonomous bioethanol distillery. The economic analysis of the diffe… Show more

“…Many of these base chemicals [5,6] can be successfully obtained from biomass. One example is furfural, a platform chemical with great market potential [7][8][9]. New chemical products made from furfural can be used in the production cycle, e.g., as alternative fuels for power boilers or as liquid fuels in transport.…”

“…In addition to ethylene, furfural is also considered a building block candidate derived from biomass [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. The most efficient and inexpensive way to obtain furfural from biomass is by using homogeneous catalysts, such as H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , and HCl [ 2 , 18 ].…”

“…As a lignocellulosic material, straw has several potential applications, including production of electricity [1,11], biofuels [12,13], and biochemicals [14,15]. Part of this biomass is normally recovered along with sugarcane stalks (as vegetable impurities), but strategies to recover higher proportions have been proposed such as integral harvesting and baling [1,[16][17][18].…”
