This article describes the use of non-or minimally destructive methods to study damp in San Juan Bautista Church at Talamanca de Jarama in the Spanish province of Madrid. The combination of ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and wireless sensor network (WSN) techniques provided sub-surface information, while data on wall surfaces were collected with contact hygrometry and infrared thermography. The respective findings and ranges of observation were interrelated to identify the decay associated with the damp and determine the advantages and drawbacks of each instrumental method. 1. 2. METHODS The study objectives were pursued with several non-invasive monitoring instruments, including data loggers, electrical conductivity and resistivity meters, infrared thermographic cameras and ground-penetrating radar antennas. This section describes the study scenario, along with the techniques and deployment schemes used. The building analysed in the case study was chosen in light of the intense damp of uncertain origin present in its walls. As several possible sources of the problem were considered, including indoor variability, leakage, the rise of capillary water and the type of construction material used, monitoring techniques based on different physical principles (such as resistivity or wave propagation) were used at different depth ranges.

This study was focused on measurement methods for stone cultural heritages by analyzing Ultrasonic (P-wave) velocity variations according to the water content and anisotropy of rocks. As a result of analyzing of rock properties, the water content and saturation degree were rapidly changed at the beginning of drying and then showed exponential curve which their rates of change gradually decreased. However, P-wave velocity and its rate of change maintained constant values after natural drying of 10 hours. Therefore, the ultrasonic measurement for stone cultural heritages should be performed after natural drying of 10 hours considering the weather and moisture conditions. In addition, the highest values of anisotropy coefficient exhibited in granite and limestone, and indirect method was insensitive to anisotropy compared to direct method. However, all rocks remained anisotropy by indirect method. Accordingly, ultrasonic measurement considering various directions is required. The research results will contribute to customized non-destructive testing and precise diagnosis for lithological characteristics of stone cultural heritage.

Seismic events have repeatedly highlighted the vulnerability of existing masonry buildings. Seismic retrofitting is frequently focused on improving the connection between walls and roof for ensuring behavior able to resist loads from any horizontal direction. This paper deals with the design of masonry ring-beams made of clay bricks reinforced by natural fibers. Various solutions to ensure a masonry building box-behavior are possible, but this is a good combination of both static and conservation requirements, as it allows the use of bio-composites and grouts. It is a relevant possible alternative to the traditional reinforced concrete ring-beams, which are proven to be very ineffective under earthquakes. A simplified model for designing clay brick beams reinforced by flax fibers is provided, and a comparison with customary and traditional floor/roof masonry ring-beams is carried out.
