Integrated Control of Predatory Hunting by the Central Nucleus of the Amygdala

Abstract: Superior predatory skills led to the evolutionary triumph of jawed vertebrates. However, the mechanisms by which the vertebrate brain controls predation remain largely unknown. Here we reveal a critical role for the central nucleus of the amygdala in predatory hunting. Both optogenetic and chemogenetic stimulation of central amygdala of mice elicited predatory-like attacks upon both insect and artificial prey. Coordinated control of cervical and mandibular musculatures, which is necessary for accurately positi… Show more

“…This interpretation provides a neuroanatomic substrate for the proposal by Schachter and Singer of cognitive and physiological determinants of emotional feelings about a half century ago (Schachter et al, 1962). Recent ontogenetic experiments have also supported a role of the central nucleus of the amygdala in predatory behavior (Han et al, 2017). …”

“…A population of neurons within the central amygdala has recently been shown to mediate mouse predatory behaviour 152 . However, as in the other limbic regions discussed above, parallel, opposing pathways that mediate antithetical behavioural responses are likely to exist within both of these regions.…”

“…Furthermore, in many species PBg plays a role in competitive stimulus selection (Mysore and Knudsen, 2011) that may be involved in selecting one target within the visual field. Providing input to both deep SC and PBg could therefore simultaneously guide motor output during approach and facilitate selection/pursuit of a single target (Evans et al, 2018;Han et al, 2017;Li et al, 2018) . Thus, our findings are consistent with NF cells driving the visually-guided motor output needed for continuous and accurate targeting of prey.…”
