Integrated Conceptual Design Environment for Centrifugal Compressors Flow Path Design

Abstract: A new method for centrifugal and mixed-type compressors flow paths design based on a unique integrated conceptual design environment is presented in this article. At the heart of this new method is the translation of proven, integrated design environments that have been successfully used for axial turbomachinery for many years. This integrated environment is a seamless and swift processing scheme that incorporates stages aerodynamic analysis and preliminary design/sizing based on the one-dimensional method int… Show more

“…An experimental investigation of compressor flow characteristics and efficiency had been conducted to explore a theory for mini-centrifugal compressors. The effects of the number of blades, overall impeller configuration, and the rotational speed on compressor flow curve and efficiency were studied Moroz et al [27] presented a method for centrifugal and mixed type compressor flow paths design based on a unique integrated conceptual design environment. The approach provided in the paper gives the designer the opportunity to design axial, radial and mixed flow turbo-machinery using the same tool.…”

“…All iterations of the present study are accomplished utilizing the commercial software platform, AxSTREAM®, for turbomachinery design, analysis and optimization [1]. Although many loss models exist in the industry, Aungier's loss mechanisms are utilized here for the purposes of modeling losses in the impeller and diffuser [2].…”

“…A set of 24 experiments constituting a fractional factorial experiment [18] is designed and conducted using the PD tool. Similar exercise using the PD tool has been performed by Moroz et al [19]. The results of the simulation experiments are viewed in terms of main effects and interaction between the variables.…”

“…3. Once the basic compressor design parameters (such as b2, BL, D1h, D1t, D2h, N, 1, 2, Z) are provided as input the PD tool solves simplified flow equations [19] in order to get a complete compressor performance map in a few minutes. The relatively high speed with which one can get a full performance map at reasonable accuracy lends PD tool for DoE at an initial screening level.…”
